GitHub Availability Report: September 2020

During September, GitHub experienced a single incident that significantly degraded the GitHub Pages service.

September 17 Incident (15:50 UTC, lasting 4 hours 24 minutes)

Root Cause: “One of the nodes responsible for serving GitHub Pages sites became unresponsive to new builds. Since it was still online and able to serve requests, our system did not automatically remove it from service.” This caused builds directed to that node to fail.

Resolution: Manual intervention disabled the problematic node.

Preventive Measures: “Going forward, we will automatically remediate failures of this type, and ensure builds are automatically retried on a different node when possible.”
